The White Sox swung a minor trade as their major league team was running away from the Orioles on Thursday, sending Triple-A reliever Ben Peoples to Texas for minor league catcher Ben Hartl.
It's a deal without an obvious impetus, is probably the way to put it.
Peoples, who came over with Curtis Mead and Duncan Davitt from Tampa Bay in the Adrian Houser trade last July, had been the most effective member of the Charlotte bullpen this season. He posted a 2.39 ERA with 45 strikeouts against 42 baserunners over 37⅔ innings with the Knights. The catch is that he's running a career-high walk rate of 14 percent, but he's been able to compensate by holding hitters to a .156/.280/.219 line, with righties hitting just .103.
Hartl, meanwhile, is a 23-year-old catcher hitting .218/.369/.317 over 32 games with High-A Hub City. He was a 14th-round pick out of Kansas in 2024 who didn't merit a scouting report in Baseball America. The only thing that jumps out about his profile predates his D-I days, in that he's a Springfield native who was teammates of Sam Antonacci at Heartland Community College. Perhaps that explains his standout statistical attribute -- getting plunked 45 times in just 524 minor league plate appearances, a rate (8.6 percent) that somehow trumps Antonacci's (6.1 percent) with room to spare.
There's an argument for trading Peoples at some point this season, because he can reach minor league free agency after the season if he's not added to the 40-man roster. He's a fastball-reliant pitcher who gets a lot out of approach angle, and if the White Sox aren't convinced it plays in the majors and didn't see him getting past Wikelman González (who's on the 40-man and back in Charlotte after completing his rehab stint) and off-roster types like Peyton Pallette or Jairo Iriarte, then they may as well get something for him. The timing is just a little odd, because Peoples figures like he's worth an audition for some team at some point this season, and now he's the second player in the Houser return who's been flipped by the White Sox for an A-ball catcher.
