At first, I figured I was going to open this morning's Minor Keys with Winston-Salem winning a second consecutive game by a score of 2-1 while tallying just two hits and George Wolkow driving in both runs, which is one helluva statistical aberration. After hitting a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning on Tuesday, he delivered the walk-off double this time around.

And to that point, it's still the opening paragraph, and you should still read what Wolkow told James about his swing tweaks if you haven't already.
But then I saw that the Charlotte Knights beat the Durham Bulls 18-7 in 11 innings, which was made possible by Durham putting third catcher Bryan Broecker on the mound at the end of a bullpen day that already used six arms.
Granted, Broecker game into this game with three prior appearances, all of which were scoreless while allowing just a walk. In fact, he recorded the final out of the Knights' 19-2 pasting of the Bulls on Opening Day when now-Charlotte lefty Joe Rock couldn't get through the ninth on his own. Also, Broecker is the old school pitching position player who actually attempts to pitch, with Statcast registering an 89 mph fastball and six different pitch types, even if that's mostly struggling to manage eephusus.
And yet, here's how the inning unfolded:
- Andy Weber single
- Mario Camilletti 4-2 fielder's choice cutting down the runner at home
- Braden Montgomery single to load the bases
- Michael Turner two-run single
- Junior Pérez walk to load the bases
- Dustin Harris two-run single
- Korey Lee RBI single
- Caden Connor RBI double
- Dru Baker infield single to load the bases
- Weber RBI single
- Camilletti grand slam

Camilletti homered on a pitch registering 35.8 mph, because it was after Lee's RBI single that Broecker stopped throwing hard. He'd maxed out for most of his first 21 pitches, and had a five-run deficit to show for it. What's six more runs, anyway?
Camilletti will gladly take the counting stats. He's hitting .343/.470/.530 over 45 games in Charlotte, and that sixth homer set a career high because they all count the same.
Charlotte 18, Durham 7 (11 innings)
- Braden Montgomery went 3-for-7 with three strikeouts.
- Junior Pérez was 1-for-4 with two walks, two strikeouts and a stolen base.
- Duncan Davitt: 4 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HR, 37 of 64 pitches for strikes.
- Jairo Iriarte's return to Charlotte: 0.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, 8 of 20 pitches for strikes.
Birmingham 2, Knoxville 0
- Colby Shelton went 1-for-4 with a homer and two strikeouts.
- Anthony DePino went 1-for-2 with two walks.
- So did Samuel Zavala, who was caught stealing.
- Jeral Perez was 0-for-4 with a K.
Notes:
*The Barons released Eric Adler, whose last pitch was an HBP the Pensacola dugout thought suspect at Rickwood Field. It was more of a symptom than a cause, as Adler had a 23.32 ERA over nine games with the Barons, and only recorded three combined outs over his last three appearances. His line over that stretch: 1 IP, 11 H, 13 R, 13 ER, 4 HR, 3 BB, 0 K, 1 HBP.
Winston-Salem 2, Hub City 1
- Caleb Bonemer was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
- George Wolkow avoided the same line by hitting a walk-off double in his final PA.
- Kyle Lodise singled, walked, struck out and stole a base.
- Boston Smith walked twice, struck out and was caught stealing.
- Mathias LaCombe: 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 25 of 37 pitches for strikes.
Kannapolis 8, Hickory 3
- Abraham Nunez went 1-for-4 with a walk, strikeout and stolen base.
- Jaden Fauske was 0-for-5 with two strikeouts.
- Javier Mogollón was 0-for-5 with three strikeouts.
- Rylan Galvan went 1-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts.
- Matthew Boughton went 1-for-2 with two walks and a steal of home.
- James Taussig did the damage tonight: 3-for-4 with two homers, six RBIs and the back end of that double steal.
- Blaine Wynk: 3 IP 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 21 of 35 pitches for strikes.
