Everson Pereira made a fantastic catch to end the eighth inning and spare Trevor Richards' tab at least one additional run on Wednesday, but preserving the seven-run deficit came at the cost of a trip to the 7-day concussion list. The White Sox placed him on the IL this afternoon, with Junior Pérez is coming up from Charlotte to take his place.
Pereira slammed into the wall after flagging down Ben Rice's bid for extra bases, then crumpled onto the warning track, with a number of different body parts absorbing varying degrees of impact, but said after the game that his head took the brunt of the damage.
This is Pereira's third IL stint in three months. He sprained an ankle during the first week of the season in Miami, then strained his right pectoral muscle at the end of April against the Angels. Wednesday's game was just his third game since returning from the latter injury, and his first start.
But Will Venable's team plays hard, and he commended Pereira for the effort after the game.
“He is a little shaken up, obviously. Great play,” said White Sox manager Will Venable. “He gave up his body to make that play and help Richards get through the end of that game. We have seen Everson make real good plays before. He is a really good outfielder.
“Whether it’s at the plate or defensively, these guys continue to play throughout the game, regardless of the score. It really doesn’t matter. They are out there to do a job. They plan to do a job. A great example is Everson giving himself up there.
“The fact that he was able to get up was good. He was banged up and seeing some stars, especially after he hit the wall so hard and was on the ground for a second. I’m glad he was in a good spot and will be evaluated by the doctors.”
Taking his place is Junior Pérez, whom the White Sox acquired from the Athletics for A-ball reliever Jackson Nove a month ago. He fulfills some of Pereira's characteristics by being a right-handed hitter who can play all three outfield positions, but whiffs too much to count on it playing at the major league level. He's hitting .217/.292/.401 with 84 strikeouts over 241 plate appearances on the season, and while everything across the board has been better with Charlotte in terms of production, the strikeouts have gotten worse.
- Las Vegas: .210/.273/.384, 8.4 BB%, 33.1 K%, 68.9 Contact%
- Charlotte: .230/.326/.432, 11.5 BB%, 37.9 K%, 60.9 Contact%
But Pérez and Rikuu Nishida are the only other outfielders on the 40-man roster, and Pérez's right-handedness allowed him to win out. This is his first promotion to the big leagues and he's in tonight's starting lineup, so when he takes the field, he'll be the 13th different player to make his MLB debut with the White Sox this season.

Bryan Hudson is listed as the White Sox's starter tonight, but Sean Burke is expected to handle bulk boy duties afterward. Burke is among the White Sox starters struggling in June, particularly with his control. He set a season high with five walks against the Phillies on June 6, and then did it again versus the Dodgers on Saturday. Throw in four homers, and he's lucky to have a 7.56 ERA, because his line -- 8.1 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 4 HR, 10 BB, 13 K -- grades out to a 9.82 FIP.
