The White Sox announced the resignation of Director of Amateur Scouting Mike Shirley today, stating that he is no longer in the organization.
No other details have been shared by either party, which is a stark departure from the last two times the White Sox changed scouting directors.
Far less was left unsaid when the White Sox announced a transition within the organization for the previous scouting director, Nick Hostetler, shortly after the completion of the 2019 draft (Hostetler is still listed as a special assistant). Hostetler had been the team's director of amateur scouting since 2015, when the White Sox also formally outlined a transition from the previous scouting director, Doug Laumann, whom the White Sox promoted to a senior advisor position.
Shirley, who was last seen gushing about a record-setting White Sox draft class headlined by No. 1 overall pick Roch Cholowsky, was hired in September 2019, a month after the Hostetler announcement. He'd been with the team for nearly the entire century, spending the previous year as the assistant scouting director under Hostetler, and the previous eight years as a cross checker. At the time of his hiring, he said that he wouldn't personally be taking the scouting department in a new direction, but the White Sox did change the kinds of players they directed money toward.
The White Sox used a first-round pick on prep talent for the first time since the Courtney Hawkins era by selecting Colson Montgomery with the 22nd overall pick in 2021, then selected a prep pitcher in the first round for the first time in decades by taking Noah Schultz 26th overall the following year. Prep picks like Caleb Bonemer and Jaden Fauske also received big money in the second round. Throw in June's first-round pick of Landon Thome, and the Sox made a habit of prioritizing Midwest kids who played for their Area Code teams. The strategy had yielded decent early returns.
Shirley had survived the transition from Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn to Chris Getz in 2023, and was recently entrusted with the White Sox's first No. 1 overall pick since 1977 and the largest MLB draft bonus pool ever, which are additional reasons why the timing of this news is especially jarring.
