During the early stages of their 2-1 win over the Mariners on Tuesday, the White Sox announced yet another trade with the Tampa Bay Rays. In a swap of players languishing at Triple-A, the Sox acquired 25-year-old reliever Joe Rock in exchange for infielder Oliver Dunn.
Rock, a 6-foot-6-inch lefty originally drafted in the second round by the Rockies in 2021, appeared in three games over three separate stints with the Rays last year and handled the assignment each time. Cumulatively, he allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks over 7⅔ innings, striking out 11.
But this year has been a different story, as he's walked 17 batters over 15 innings at Triple-A Durham, the leading factor in his 5.40 ERA out of the bullpen. Rock has particularly struggled against left-handed hitters. He had reverse splits last year as well, but the issue has escalated to troubling degrees thus far in 2026, as he's walked 10 of the 28 lefties he's faced and plunked three others.
Dunn, a 28-year-old who joined the Sox organization on a minor league contract as a non-roster invitee this spring, was traded in the middle of Charlotte's game against Gwinnett, so he logged four more at-bats before his chapter with the Knights came to a close. He hit .295/.393/.545 in Charlotte, but as much as we've talked about Jacob Gonzalez's home/road splits, the disparity is even greater with Dunn:
- Home: .367/.479/.723
- Road: .172/.226/.241
Rock required the White Sox to open a spot on the 40-man roster, which they did by moving Kyle Teel to the 60-day injured list. Teel is expected to miss 3-6 weeks with a right knee sprain, which will carry his absence well beyond the earliest date he's theoretically allowed to return.
