The White Sox called it a year for Andrew Benintendi, placing him on the 10-day injured list with left Achilles tendinitis. Even though the move is retroactive for Sept. 21, the IL stint will still carry through the remaining six games on the schedule, so that little bit of accounting didn't provide a benefit beyond historical accuracy.
Taking his place is Corey Julks, who spent 11 days on the active roster at the beginning of August before being designated for assignment. He cleared waivers and had the ability to opt for free agency since the White Sox had outrighted him already this calendar year, but he accepted the assignment to Charlotte, where he played well enough to merit consideration for such an opportunity as this one. In fact, he's been fine for both the major league team and the Triple-A one:
- Charlotte: .300/.374/.477, 30 2B, 1 3B, 15 HR, 18 SB, 48 BB, 99 K
- Chicago: 3-for-8, 2 2B, 0 BB, 2 K
With the White Sox selecting Julks' contract, the 40-man roster is at 39.
As for Benintendi, he finishes the year hitting .240/.307/.431 with 20 homers and 38 extra-base hits over 116 games and 470 plate appearances. Baseball-Reference.com has him at 1.0 WAR, while FanGraphs flips the numbers (0.1 WAR), but it does count as his first above-average season at the plate in three tries, as he posted a 105 OPS+ and a 102 wRC+. It's still not a great return on investment and he wouldn't argue otherwise, especially since the leg troubles limited him to just 69 appearances in left, as opposed to 44 at DH. He has two years and $31 million remaining on his five-year, $75 million contract
With Benintendi on the shelf, Lenyn Sosa's home run title probability shot through the roof. He owns the team lead with 21, and with Benintendi's 20 locked into place, the only challenger is Colson Montgomery, who has been stuck at 18 since Sept. 5.
