Tracking the whereabouts of the 2024 White Sox in 2025

Usually a "Where are they now?" article for a specific team requires the passage of a certain amount of time, whether because the roster didn't have a chance to change much from one year to another, or the players who left landed jobs of note at their next destination.

But like the Winchester Mystery House, the 2024 White Sox were built different. Some 63 godforsaken souls appeared in a game for the team, and as Ted's season-ending Sporcle proved, remembering them all was a nearly impossible task.

With pitchers and catchers reporting in a matter of days -- and with James Fegan reporting to Arizona this afternoon courtesy of Sox Machine supporters -- it seems like a fitting time to figure out just where everybody who suited up for the losingest team in MLB history can be found in spring training, and a fair amount of legwork is already required.

We can start by checking off the players who are still on the White Sox, or were traded by/claimed from them.

Still on the White Sox 40-man roster (25): Jacob Amaya, Justin Anderson, Brooks Baldwin, Andrew Benintendi, Prelander Berroa, Sean Burke, Ky Bush, Jonathan Cannon, Oscar Colás, Jake Eder, Fraser Ellard, Dominic Fletcher, Jairo Iriarte, Jordan Leasure, Korey Lee, Davis Martin, Nick Nastrini, Bryan Ramos, Luis Robert Jr., Jared Shuster, Lenyn Sosa, Drew Thorpe, Miguel Vargas, Gus Varland, Andrew Vaughn

Off the White Sox 40-man roster, still in the organization (2): Corey Julks, Zach DeLoach

Already on other teams (5): Tanner Banks, Garrett Crochet, Erick Fedde, Michael Kopech, Chuckie Robinson

Bounced around waivers, never reached free agency (2): Duke Ellis, Braden Shewmake

In DFA limbo (1): Steven Wilson

Shewmake just went from the Royals to the Yankees this week on a waiver claim. He joins Ellis, who bounced from the Mets to the Mariners to the Yankees on waivers during the season, and the Yankees succeeded in outrighting him in November. As for Wilson, we'll find out whether he clears waivers later this week.

So that's 35 players whose rights have been retained or otherwise remained under control throughout the winter. When it comes to the other 28, barely half of them have been able to announce their next moves.

major league contracts (4)

Tim Hill: Re-signing with the Yankees on Saturday for one year and $2.85 million, with a club option for 2026.

Yoán Moncada: Reportedly signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Angels. It's pending a physical, so don't use ink yet.

Tommy Pham: Reportedly signed a one-year, $4.025 million contract with the Pirates, although it's not yet official.

Michael Soroka: Signed a one-year, $9 million contract with the Nationals on Dec. 19.

Congratulations to Soroka for being the only White Sox free agent to sign a major league contract prior to last week.

minor league contracts (11)

Enyel De Los Santos: Signed with Atlanta on Dec. 15, invited to spring training.

Deivi García: Signed a minor league deal with Milwaukee on Nov. 18 with an invitation to spring training.

Eloy Jiménez: Signed with Tampa Bay on Dec. 31. He'll make $2 million if he makes the team, with another $2 million possible through incentives.

Brad Keller: Signed with Cubs on Jan. 31 with an invitation to spring training.

Chad Kuhl: Signed with Atlanta on Feb. 6, generating this amazingly tortured bit of clickbait:

Nicky Lopez: Signed with the Cubs on Feb. 2. He'll make $1.5 million if he makes the active roster.

Martín Maldonado: Signed with San Diego on Jan. 16, invited to spring training.

Rafael Ortega: Signed with Mets on Nov. 18 with an invitation to spring training.

Bryan Shaw: Signed with Cincinnati on Dec. 20, in hopes of a reunion with Terry Francona.

Gavin Sheets: Signed with San Diego on Super Bowl Sunday, invited to spring training.

Jake Woodford: Signed with Colorado on Jan. 12, invited to spring training.

Officially retired (1)

Dominic Leone: Announced his retirement on Instagram on Oct. 26, now working for E3 Sports Performance.

Whereabouts unknown (13)

  • John Brebbia
  • Mike Clevinger
  • Paul DeJong
  • Chris Flexen
  • Matt Foster
  • Robbie Grossman
  • Danny Mendick
  • Sammy Peralta
  • Kevin Pillar
  • Zach Remillard
  • Nick Senzel
  • Touki Toussaint

When it comes to credible MLB rumors, the only player for whom I can find any recent heat is DeJong, as Dan Hayes said last week that the Twins are considering him and Luis Urías as they look for a veteran shortstop. Everybody else remains a free agent, at least by all transaction records. Going one step further by looking at their Instagram pages, the only material updates are that Remillard is returning to his Capital Region roots by partnering with an Albany-area clothing brand, and Grossman and Mendick got married. To other people, not each other. We probably would've heard about it sooner if that were the case.
