Drew Anderson's White Sox career consisted of one game in 2020, when he gave up six runs over 1⅓ innings because Rick Renteria asked too much from him in a bullpen game. Zach Burdi's inning of work three pitchers later ended up being the more significant MLB debut, although not by much.
Anderson, who had joined the roster that day by replacing fell one-game Sox Brady Lail, was DFA'd the next day and replaced by José Ruíz, who had the most staying power of anybody.
Suffice it to say, his start against the White Sox this afternoon could have a greater impact on the franchise than anything he did for them. He's pitched a complete game's worth of long appearances this month (9 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 6 K). If he's effective, he can pitch four innings, so he's neither a starter nor an opener. The White Sox are tasked with making him look like a compromised candidate.
