You won't see the Birmingham's Thursday night box score against Pensacola listed below because the game was suspended after eight innings with the Barons leading the Blue Wahoos 16-13 due to Southern League curfew rules that start new innings from starting after 1 a.m.

As for why the game didn't end after six full innings with the Barons leading 13-12 when a rain delay halted play for three hours and 40 minutes, it's harder to say.

Barons manager Pat Leyland made his objection known. When Ryan Ignoffo reached with an infield single to start the bottom of the eighth, Leyland saw an opportunity to get run and sprinted toward the first-base umpire to expedite the process.

It's easy to understand his frustration, starting with the fact that the Barons gave up 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth to turn a 6-1 lead into an 11-1 deficit. That said, the Barons answered with seven runs in the top of the sixth to retake a 13-11 lead. Dillon Lewis hit a solo shot to start the bottom of the sixth, but Carson Jacobs was able to mitigate other traffic and close out the inning with the Barons still leading by one.

One pitch into Jacob Burke's plate appearance to start the seventh, sheets of rain blew in, and that started a delay that lasted 220 minutes, even though the game could've been called an official Barons victory well before then.

Nevertheless, play resumed in front of "a valiant 12 fans," according to Pensacola's press release. The two teams ended up trading single runs in the seventh, and Birmingham scored two more in the eighth to take a 16-13 lead. Morris Austin closed out the eighth with a strikeout, and when the broadcast resumed, the field was clear, and Pensacola's broadcast assumed the result was final. It was not.

Tony La Russa was in attendance, for those wondering what he's up to.
