Shane Smith's first Charlotte start looked a lot like his Chicago starts, in that he nearly didn't make it out of the first inning. He opened his start against Memphis on Sunday by loading the bases on a single, walk and HBP, and just when it looked like he might get out of the inning with minimal damage after a double play, two more hits gave the Redbirds a 3-0 lead.
But after that 21-pitch mess to open his afternoon, Smith ended up retiring 10 of the last 11 batters he faced, and needed only 41 pitches to cover the next three innings.
Statcast says he kept it simple: 71 percent of those 62 pitches were four-seam fastballs, along with 15 curveballs and three whole changeups. Pitch classification isn't as precise at the Triple-A level, but what's most noteworthy is that Smith sat 96-97 over his four innings. It's probably a little reductive to say his success hinges on how hard he throws, but if his best form features him bullying hitters with two kinds of fastballs, then there might not be much else to look at during this reset.
