Good morning!
With the news of Wilbur Wood's passing last weekend, it felt right that the following week's Sporcle Saturday should, in some way, include the knuckleballer in it. The question was where to start: while his workload is --rightly so-- a defining feature of his career, he has enough other statistics going for him that he has appeared in many quizzes over the years.
One of my favorite quotes from Wood is in this terrific story:
Everyone used to ask me, ‘How fast did you ever throw the ball?’” Wilbur Wood once said. “I told them, ‘90 miles an hour,’ and they’d look at me like I’m crazy. So I said, ‘I threw it 45 to the catcher and he threw it 45 back – that’s 90 miles.
Unfortunately, I cannot produce a quiz which will test you on successful Sox pitchers throughout franchise history who had slower-than-average stuff! I can, though, incorporate pitcher wins into this week's Sporcle. Initially, I thought I could use a threshold of 100 career wins with the White Sox as a cutoff, but that only gives us 12 names. Thus, the cutoff to make this quiz is 50 wins or more while playing with the White Sox. In all, that's 49 guys: how many can you name? Good luck!
Quiz Parameters
- I’ve allotted 15 minutes for completion attempts.
- For hints, you get the pitcher’s years with the team, and the number of wins they recorded.
Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:
- Just 11 pitchers on this list also have recorded 1000+ strikeouts while on the Sox, though 3 of these do not have 100 or more wins.
- The highest ERA from the pitchers on this list is 5.04, while the lowest is 1.81. A bonus star for you if you can name one or both.
