White Sox Minor Keys: Aug. 17, 2025

Truist Field in Charlotte
Laura Wolff / Charlotte Knights

Jac Caglianone provided the first reason to second-guess the White Sox's selection of Hagen Smith when the Royals called him up at the start of June, given that Caglianone was the position player most connected to the White Sox in the run-up to the draft, and the Royals ended up taking him one pick after the Sox selected Smith at No. 5. That said, Caglianone's major league body of work hasn't exacerbated the issue, as he hit .147/.205/.280 with poor metrics in right field over 41 games before going on the IL with a hamstring injury.

The pick after Caglianone, however, is making his own case for serious regrets.

JJ Wetherholt, selected by the Cardinals with the seventh-overall pick, is now hitting .310/.403/.670 over his first 119 plate appearances with Triple-A Memphis, and he spent the last week hammering Charlotte pitching. He hit safely in all five games he played, including three homers over a four-game stretch and a 3-for-5 performance in the finale.

He also made his Triple-A debut against the Knights back in July, and when you combine the performances, you get a .364/.432/.879 line over 37 plate appearances, all while playing primarily shortstop, but with second and third base mixed in as well.
