If the White Sox end up trading Mike Tauchman before the trade deadline, they now have an outfielder worth testing with the open playing time, as they have acquired left-handed hitting outfielder Will Robertson from the Toronto Blue Jays for cash considerations.
Robertson, 27, hit .292/.403/.578 over 62 games for while playing all three outfield spots for Triple-A Buffalo, with most of his appearances coming in right field. His best stretch as a pro culminated in his first call-up to the majors in mid-June. It didn't go as he'd hoped, as he was 1-for-10 with a walk and seven strikeouts in three games, but it was going to be short-lived no matter what, as he held down the roster spot vacated by Nathan Lukes during his stay on the 7-day concussion injured list.
Robertson was DFA'd on Sunday to open a roster spot for Ryan Burr's return from the 60-day injured list, and he appeared to be a victim of Toronto's enviable outfield depth. Even without Robertson, the Blue Jays have nine outfielders on their 40-man roster, including four lefties and one switch-hitter.
The Blue Jays drafted Robertson out of Creighton in the fourth round of the 2019 draft, seven picks after the White Sox took James Beard.
