Everson Pereira was claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday, after he was designated for assignment earlier this week to make room for Brenton Doyle on the active roster.

Pereira was designated for assignment after hitting .225/.284/.438, but in only 27 games as he's been slowed by a litany of injuries. It's good thematic timing that Pereira gets claimed right as the White Sox face a left-handed starting pitcher in Ranger Suarez, laying bare the path they chose instead.

Doyle starts in center, but also Luisangel Acuña returns to the outfield to start in left, where he should be overqualified defensively (though that's no guarantee), but hasn't been subject to regular at-bats for some time now. Acuña is 15-for-37 with a pair of doubles against left-handers since the beginning of June, but it's a tiny sample of better results that have yet to boost his OPS beyond .555 for the year.

Luis Castillo makes his White Sox debut on Thursday night. For whatever it's worth, he has a 4.24 ERA with 20 strikeouts against six walks in 17 innings at Fenway Park, for his career.
