Grant Umberger

If the results of Grant Umberger's previous start could be written off as a byproduct of a clubhouse plague, then it's fair to wonder what he's still doing in Low-A.

The undrafted 23-year-old lefty resumed his dominant form for Kannapolis against Fredericksburg on Wednesday, allowing just one run on a solo shot and four other hits while striking out nine. That's plenty good by itself, but the efficiency is what makes it stand out. He needed just 75 pitches to complete six innings, and 59 of them -- 79 percent -- were strikes. He only ran one three-ball count over the course of the 21 batters he faced, and that was after he got ahead 0-2 (he ended up winning an eight-pitch battle with a backwards K).

Since moving to the rotation in early June, Umberger has a 2.07 ERA over 43⅓ innings, with 49 strikeouts against 44 baserunners. If you take away his tough start against Charleston on July 18, the line improves to 38.2 IP, 22 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 11 BB, 44 K. That's good for a 1.16 ERA, and most of the damage came up front.

Charlotte 4, Toledo 3 (10 innings)

  • Brooks Baldwin was 1-for-5 with two strikeouts, but the hit was the decisive two-run homer in the 10th inning.
  • Bryan Ramos, 0-for-4 with a K.
  • Fraser Ellard: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, 4 of 9 pitches for strikes.
  • Peyton Pallette: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 11 of 14 pitches for strikes.
