Pregame notes: Emergency starter

James Fegan/Sox Machine

The dreams of a White Sox six-man rotation has gone the way of every other illusion of a six-man rotation in human history: felled by injuries.

Davis Martin was originally the scheduled starter for Friday night in Canada, but was placed on the injured list with a right forearm strain. Disconcerting!

Will Venable had suggested on Thursday that Grant Taylor was cleared for outings on back-to-back days, which will be put to the test by him getting the start Friday ahead of surely a thick crop of relievers behind him. With the way the Sox are looking at Taylor for the time being, that it counts as a start is a bit of misnomer.

Speaking of things Venable acknowledged on Thursday, Cam Booser's velocity was down during his ineffective eighth inning outing in Game 1 of a doubleheader sweep against the Cardinals. On Friday, he was placed on the injured list with a shoulder strain.

Wikelman González, long tagged as a potential quick riser after being moved to the Triple-A bullpen, was called up for his major league debut. As was less-heralded left-handed starter Jake Palisch, who has rode a crafty blend of offspeed pitches to a parade of weak contact in Double-A Birmingham. He provides some potential length, for a pitching staff that will probably need some. Caleb Freeman was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Palisch.

Tauchman was not placed on the injured list after suffering right groin discomfort at the end of Thursday's loss, but is out of the lineup.
