Brandon Drury might be the first major leaguer who is too cursed to play for the White Sox.
On Thursday, Drury was released by the White Sox while injured for the second time this season. During spring training, he opted out of his minor league contract with the idea that the White Sox would reward their hottest spring hitter with a spot on the 26-man roster, but then he broke his thumb during infield practice. The White Sox granted his release rather than use a 40-man spot on a guy they'd have to put on the injured list.
Drury then re-signed with the White Sox, figuring that he'd be able to hit his way back into the picture after recovering from the thumb injury, but that quest was interrupted when he took a pitch to the wrist on April 26. After a week of wait-and-see, they placed him on the injured list on May 8, and then released him a week later. He hit just .179/.319/.282 over 10 games with Charlotte before the HBP, and with a quarter of the season already in the books and multiple other rosterable players already rehabbing in Charlotte, a second hand/hand-adjacent injury probably shifted his timetable beyond the point of helping this team.
