I think of all the days of the year, Christmas Eve is the only one where I dread the thought of major White Sox news breaking. Some are less convenient than others, but Dec. 24 features 1) no time or desire to cover a significant event and 2) the time period that is least conducive to an audience hanging around and waiting for more.
So while I think Mitch Garver makes a lot of sense for the Mariners at two years and $24 million, Jeff Passan broke that news at 6:05 p.m. CT on Sunday, and I wouldn't really want to spend the next 18 hours carving out time to consider a similar development for the White Sox.
Fortunately, the White Sox maintained a high asking price for Dylan Cease through the holiday. How high? Cincinnati Enquirer reporter Jason Williams has one answer:
I know the White Sox were asking the Reds a crazy price for Dylan Cease. Chicago wanted Edwin Arroyo, Rhett Lowder, Connor Phillips and at least one more prospect. Do they think Krall is Santa Claus? That’s enough to put you on the naughty list all by itself. If you’re going to spend that much, go get Houston’s Framber Valdez. He’s an All-Star workhorse.
But after tonight, everything is fair game. For the time being, whether you're celebrating Christmas, or just some downtime as the year winds to a close, happy holidays to you and yours.
