Good morning!
Today's Sporcle title is somewhat misleading. The White Sox have, of course, never had a batter hit .400 over the course of a full season. Best I can tell, that would make for a terrible quiz because **checks notes** there would be no answers.
However! A certain DH playing for a certain team in a certain city that starts with "C" and ends in "hicago" has hit .400 or better over the course of his first 15 games of the season. (That streak ended, unfortunately, after Monday's eminently forgettable loss to the Red Sox)
This got me wondering: how have White Sox hitters fared to begin their seasons with the White Sox? Happily, Stathead (formerly Baseball Reference's Play Index) recently introduced a new feature called "Span Finder" that allowed me to test this out!
I was surprised to learn that a relatively small number of batters in team history have actually accomplished the feat. Your task for today? Name the 24 instances where a White Sox batter has hit .400 or better in his first 15 games of the season (please note quiz parameters below). Good luck!
Quiz Parameters
- To qualify, a batter must have a minimum of 50 plate appearances total in those 15 games (with at least 1 PA in each of those 15 games).
- For hints, I've provided the year, batting average, and position of the player(s) in question.
Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:
- Four players on this list are tied with the most home runs, with 4 over this span.
- 22 RBI are the most, however (1962). (Second place is 18 RBI)
- Highest batting average? Same player with the most RBIs, hitting a robust .468.
