The White Sox didn't release my favorite January name dump -- that would be the list of spring training non-roster invitees -- but they did release the player development staff for the 2020 season, and that'll suffice for now.
The club has new managers at all four affiliates and a prominent new pitching coach in Winston-Salem, but the bigger change seems to be occurring in the non-traditional ranks.
Top level
| Role | 2019 | 2020 |
|---|---|---|
| Director | Chris Getz | Chris Getz |
| Field coordinator | Doug Sisson | Doug Sisson |
| Pitching coordinator | Kirk Champion | Everett Teaford |
| Assistant pitching coordinator | Everett Teaford J.R. Perdew | J.R. Perdew |
| Hitting coordinator | Mike Gellinger | Ben Broussard |
| Assistant hitting coordinator | Matt Lisle | Ryan Johansen |
| Catching coordinator | John Orton | John Orton |
| Performance coordinator | Dale Torborg | Goldy Simmons |
| Senior Biomechanical Engineer | n/a | Ben Hansen |
While some titles might not be perfect matches for the ones the year before, there are a few shifts of note.
Kirk Champion is nowhere to be found on this list, which is unusual since he's held various roles in the system for more than 30 years. He's replaced by Everett Teaford, who has worked himself from an analytical coach role on the Birmingham Barons to pitching coordinator in his third season.
Ben Broussard, who previously held the title of "leadership and development coordinator," moves into the role of hitting coordinator. Ryan Johansen, one of two hitting analysts the Sox hired last year, spent all of last season in Kannapolis. He'll now try his hand at the role that didn't work for Matt Lisle in his one year on the staff.
Ben Hansen, who was previously the chief technology officer for Motus (biomechanical pitching sleeves), announced his title in late December. He has a background in workload management.
Along the same lines, the White Sox also announced three quality control staffers (Zach Jones, Nate Pearson and Devin Pickett) who weren't on the player development roster last year. Pickett has been in the organization for a couple years as an information coordinator, but perhaps the Sox have added/shifted some bodies to the farm system in order to close the information gap that some of the White Sox's SEC prospects have inadvertently highlighted.
Charlotte Knights
| Role | 2019 | 2020 |
|---|---|---|
| Manager | Mark Grudzielanek | Wes Helms |
| Pitching coach | Steve McCatty | Matt Zaleski |
| Hitting coach | Frank Menechino | Howie Clark |
| Coach | Guillermo Quiroz | Mike Daniel |
Steve McCatty, who presided over the ascents of Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo López and Michael Kopech in Charlotte, is now a part of the complex crew in a new title as the rehab pitching coach. That reassignment clears a path for Matt Zaleski to continue his steady rise.
"Wes Helms" is both a name and a true sentence, as he's managing the Charlotte Knights after serving as a coach for Birmingham last season. He replaces Mark Grudzielanek, who was there for a couple years, but wasn't particularly visible.
Birmingham Barons
| Role | 2019 | 2020 |
|---|---|---|
| Manager | Omar Vizquel | Justin Jirschele |
| Pitching coach | Richard Dotson | Richard Dotson |
| Hitting coach | Charlie Poe | Charlie Romero |
| Coach | Wes Helms | Devin DeYoung |
Omar Vizquel, conversely, was highly visible, and his departure was highly publicized. He made a lot of headlines during his two years in the system, but his analytically inadvisable style of play didn't yield the rewards in Birmingham that it did in Winston-Salem. His departure clears the path for Justin Jirschele's programmed ascent.
Charlie Romero gets a big bump, as he served as the assistant hitting coach with the Dominican Summer League White Sox affiliate last year.
DeYoung replaces Helms in the coach role, and he spent last year in the Red Sox system as a roving hitting and catching instructor. He charted his own course in the independent leagues and clinic circuit, and it seems to be working.
Winston-Salem Dash
| Role | 2019 | 2020 |
|---|---|---|
| Manager | Justin Jirschele | Ryan Newman |
| Pitching coach | Matt Zaleski | Danny Farquhar |
| Hitting coach | Jamie Dismuke | Charlie Poe |
Ryan Newman and Charlie Poe have served in a bunch of different capacities over their White Sox careers, so the only big deal is Danny Farquhar, whose future as a pitching coach was foreshadowed by his not-quite-under-the-radar work with Lucas Giolito in 2018.
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers
| Role | 2019 | 2020 |
|---|---|---|
| Manager | Ryan Newman | Guillermo Quiroz |
| Pitching coach | José Bautista | José Bautista |
| Hitting coach | Cole Armstrong | Cole Armstrong |
| Coach | Ryan Johansen | Patrick Leyland |
The newly named Cannon Ballers have a couple of new coaches as they set to open a new ballpark. Guillermo Quiroz, a 38-year-old former catcher, spent the last two seasons as a coach at Winston-Salem and Charlotte.
Patrick Leyland is the son of Jim Leyland, and has spent the last two seasons as a coach for the Delmarva Shorebirds and Bowie BaySox.
Great Falls Voyagers
| Role | 2019 | 2020 |
|---|---|---|
| Manager | Tim Esmay | Mike Gellinger |
| Pitching coach | John Ely | John Ely |
| Hitting coach | Cam Seitzer | Cam Seitzer |
All familiar names here, although Gellinger got his due in James Fegan's deep dive into Paul Konerko's obsessive hitting style.
AZL White Sox
| Role | 2019 | 2020 |
|---|---|---|
| Manager | Ever Magallanes | Ever Magallanes |
| Pitching coach | Felipe Lira | Felipe Lira Drew Hasler |
| Hitting coach | Gary Ward | Gary Ward |
| Coach | Louis Silverio | n/a |
All familiar names here as well, but it's noteworthy to see Drew Hasler, the large adult son of White Sox bullpen coach Curt Hasler, getting his start in the coaching system after spending 2019 on Winston-Salem's injured list. Curt Hasler spent 25 years in the White Sox system before his promotion to bullpen coach, and was praised for his ability to impart instruction on deliveries,
I wonder if the two pitching coaches is a response to spending a second- and third-round pick on prep pitchers.
DSL White Sox
| Role | 2018 | 2019 |
|---|---|---|
| Academy supervisor | n/a | Louis Silverio |
| Field coordinator | Guillermo Reyes | Guillermo Reyes |
| Complex operations coordinator | Manuel Santana | Manuel Santana |
| Manager | Angel Rosario | Angel Rosario |
| Pitching coach | Leo Hernández | Leo Hernández |
| Hitting coach | Ángel González | Gerardo Olivares |
| Assistant pitching coach | José Brito | José Brito |
| Assistant hitting coach | Charlie Romero | Ángel González |
| Outfield coach | Julio Ramirez | Julio Ramirez |
Assuming there aren't multiple Louis Silverios, I'm pretty sure this one is the guy the White Sox drafted in the 33rd round back in 2014, and entered the coaching ranks with the AZL White Sox last season.
