Pregame notes: Happy Mother’s Day

James Fegan/Sox Machine

Maybe you associate your mother with warm and fuzzy feelings, but I associate mine with the hardened resolve of an experienced clinician who acts off verifiable data.

So here are some facts and figures:

--The White Sox are seeking their fifth series win out of their last seven opportunities. They are 12-8 over that span.

--Davis Martin is second in the majors with a 1.64 ERA

--Bryan Hudson has a career-high 17 consecutive scoreless appearances, and hasn't been scored upon since March.

--The White Sox offense is slashing .264/.356/.456 over their last 20 games, and their 34 home runs rank second in MLB over that span.

--Sam Antonacci is the fourth MLB player since the dead-ball era to draw seven hit-by-pitches in his first 22 career games. Interesting enough, two of the other instances came in 2023 with Miguel Amaya and Zach Neto.

That's all nice, but maybe it just comes from the boys playing hard.

"The cohesion and the effort level on a night-to-night basis is outstanding and noted by opponents, it's noted by others in the league," said bench coach Walker McKinven. "That's been our identity and what we're leaning on; the effort that we play with each night and it's something we're going to continue to strive for.

"There's been an insistence upon it in the last year and a half, but guys like [Miguel Vargas], guys like Chase [Meidroth], guys like Colson [Montgomery] really driving the bus on that, making it our identity little by little. If you come in and you're not a high-effort, high-energy guy, you're in the minority here, so it helps drags others along. So making that part of the culture has been super important. Talking to Randal [Grichuk] coming in, he was observing from afar 'You guys are playing with a lot of energy, I was excited to come,' and we laid it out for him like 'Yeah, we play hard every single night' and he loves it and he wants to be part of it. A small little bit of feedback on that is cool to see."

Andrew Benintendi is out of the lineup again after waking up with a sore neck on Saturday, but Will Venable said he's day-to-day.

The White Sox left their Thursday starter as TBA for next week's series against the Royals. Sean Burke would normally be due up, and said he's doing great physically, but Anthony Kay would also be on regular rest by then.

Kyle Teel is beginning a rehab assignment on Tuesday with Triple-A Charlotte.
