White Sox prospect Tanner McDougal

Rounding out the week's action from the White Sox's top pitching prospects in Charlotte, Tanner McDougal threw five innings of one-run ball against the Nashville Sounds, but unlike Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith before him, control was a problem, especially early.

He came out of the gate struggling to locate anything besides fastballs, loading the bases with a pair of walks around a single before Sam Antonacci started a 4-6-3 double play with a glove flip to allow McDougal to escape unscathed. He issued his other walks in the third, with a PitchCom delay interrupting his rhythm further.

Yet the wildness didn't affect him, at least on this afternoon. He faced mostly righties, which is why he didn't have to throw a single changeup. His fastball averaged 98.3 mph, so country hardball was a viable option for him. What's more, he became so fastball-reliant that on the occasions he could land a breaking pitch in the zone, it tended to contribute to easy outs, which is how he completed five innings on just 74 pitches despite the free passes.

McDougal has walked eight batters over his first nine innings, so this is something he's eventually going to need to tighten up as the weather gets warmer, the ballparks livelier, and the lineups more platoon-oriented. For the time being, he was in position for his first Triple-A win until Adisyn Coffey walked three batters, plunked another and issued two run-scoring wild pitches before he could record the third out of a four-run Nashville eighth that flipped the game.
