Good morning!
One of the 2025 pitching lines which stand out to me when looking at the White Sox pitching page on Baseball Reference is Mike Vasil's innings pitched: 101.0. Per a Stathead search, that's the first time a Sox reliever (80% of appearances coming in relief) has crossed the 100 IP threshold since 2018, and the first in a non-swingman-type role since 2010. Pretty rare to see these days!
That pitching line is what inspired today's theme: other White Sox relievers to log at least 100 innings over the course of a single season. As it turns out, there have been 46 such instances in White Sox franchise history: how many can you name? Good luck!
Quiz Parameters
- I've allotted 20 minutes for completion attempts.
- I alluded to it above, but to qualify a pitcher must have logged at least 80% of their innings total in relief. There are still a few names on here that I would associate more as a starter, so if you're stuck, think of some of the starters during that era and you may hit upon them.
- For hints, I've provided the season and the innings pitched.
Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:
- Vasil's 2.50 ERA is good for 13th-best all time in franchise history.
- The most games logged by a pitcher on this list is 88, coming in 1968.
- Other relievers across MLB to log 100 innings in relief: nobody. Vasil was the only reliever to do so this season! Since 2020, Michael King logged 104.2 in 2023 for the Yankees while Nick Martinez had 110.1, also in 2023, for the Padres.
