In Monday's Minor Keys, I speculated that the White Sox farm system might no longer qualify as a top-half system in organizational rankings after all the recent graduations culled the players for whom there was real consensus about major league value, even if opinions of major league impact varied.
It only took a couple of days to test that take, as both MLB Pipeline and Baseball America reorganized their farm system rankings to account for their revised, post-draft prospect rankings for every team, and it's with a heavy heart that I must announce the outlets are at it again.
MLB Pipeline ranks the White Sox system 17th in baseball, down from sixth before the season, while Baseball America has the Sox falling from fourth to 18th.
Both sites cite the same reasons for the drop. On the positive side, the White Sox have graduated a number of prospects this season. On the other side of the ledger, the prospects expected to buoy the system after the graduations haven't really done so, as Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith have invited scrutiny with their control, and Braden Montgomery's season counts as merely OK.
