Back at the previous shop, every GM availability was cause to craft some long narrative about the state of the team, the situation that Rick Hahn would have to navigate, the decisions that were looming.
But time has passed and wisdom is its residue, and attempting to craft soaring narratives out of executive-speak about a team 28 games under .500 in June is for clowns. So, here are the updates from Chris Getz's media session, with some assists from Will Venable.

As far as the current rotation goes, Getz did not provide a specific timeline on Davis Martin's forearm strain, but tried to downplay its severity by noting that Martin wanted to pitch through it. He is not throwing as the Sox wait for soreness to subside, but will start building back up when it does. Clearly, they expect him to pitch again this season, but it's fair to wonder if the All-Star break will arrive here first.
Jonathan Cannon was packing a big ol' duffel bag fulla stuff Monday afternoon because he's scheduled to make a three-inning rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday. His next step from there is undetermined. But it's hard to imagine he would need more than two rehab outings total, if that.
Tuesday is a bullpen game as the Sox are pushing Sean Burke back by a day, and Venable indicated Mike Vasil will play a big role, if not just start the game outright. Such rotation shuffles will continue until the young pitchers become older pitchers.
"The goal is not to shut down anyone," Getz said of their management plans. "If there comes a point in the season where that's the wise thing to do, we'll do that. But we want these players to experience a full season at the major league level."

Mike Tauchman (groin discomfort) was a full participant in the team's pre-game stretch activities and could be available off the bench Monday night, so the team is talking like he's avoiding an IL placement.
Cam Booser's shoulder strain is "responding well," according to Getz and he doesn't "feel like it's going to be a lengthy IL stint."

Grant Taylor will get the opportunity to pitch multiple innings out of the bullpen. And while him recording his first career save on Sunday against the top of the Blue Jays lineup garnered attention as him graduating to the highest leverage role, in a White Sox bullpen where there is no closer, Will Venable indicated there's nothing for him to graduate to.
"I think he has pitched in high leverage," Venable said. "The thing that we talk about the ninth inning and everyone always knows what it means to be a closer and certainly those last three outs are hard to get. There's a lot of outs in the middle of the game that are high leverage and important, too. So we expect to use him in any spot that helps us win a game."
Getz said he sees Wikelman González as a multi-inning reliever going forward and long-term. The existence of Garrett Crochet means that the Sox can now always say any good reliever has a chance of returning to starting, but they're not planning on stretching out either of these two anytime soon.

On the minor league side, Getz said Hagen Smith has thrown multiple ups in his bullpen sessions and is still set to be activated later this month. As has been discussed, the biomechanical work and adjustments to his delivery were spurred by the elbow soreness Smith experienced.
Noah Schultz got rocked for six runs in 5 1/3 innings in his Triple-A debut, but Getz's assessments of his first start in Charlotte ran pretty similar to Jim's analysis.
"[He] gave up some runs, but you look at the strikeout-to-walk ratio and the type of contact that was hit, it was a quality outing," Getz said. "We felt he was ready for the next challenge. He pitched well. But to get a guy to go up to Triple-A, for someone that's still fairly young in his development, is a feather in the cap to Noah Schultz and, certainly, the organization. We're going to continue to pitch him at the Triple-A level, and we'll see how the season finishes."
Getz said they're open to Schultz getting acclimated to the majors late in the season, but they'll have to see how he progresses.
Speaking of progress, it would be nice to see more from Colson Montgomery, who has struck out 16 times in 39 trips to the plate since returning from taking a pitch off his hand.
"He understands what he needs to do on a mechanics standpoint," Getz said. "Overall he has been healthy. We have seen some signs and then there's a stretch here or there that perhaps he's kind of getting exposed at times. It's about closing the holes, making the adjustments and continuing to stay confident."

The White Sox figure to be active sellers at the trade deadline. And while Getz talking about how it's possible for Luis Robert Jr. to stay with the team through the end of his option years seems like a waste of time, it did seem more notable that he staked out his lack of interest in a scenario where he trades out young players.
"I like the group that we have here," Getz said. "There could come a point, at some time, that we need to consider something to repurpose the talent on our roster. But at this point, I want these guys to really enjoy being with the Chicago White Sox and getting comfortable at the major league level here."
