Chris Getz maintains faith in Pedro Grifol, but open to White Sox roster changes

Although Chris Getz was formally introduced as White Sox general manager last week, his introductory period is going to last a while, because every appearance he makes before he can actually act is part of the “How’s This Actually Going To Be Different From Before?” U.S. tour.

That remains an open question, because when it comes to the manager, nothing will change. Speaking in Detroit on Saturday, Getz maintained that Pedro Grifol is his guy, and the circumstances are more to blame.

“Pedro came into a tough situation with the disappointment of 2022,” Getz said. “His experience is very valuable with all the different roles he’s had in this game. He’s experienced winning. He’s determined to get this right. I think that different type of support, he’ll benefit from. And the leadership starting with myself could really help him do that.”

There’s no doubt that Grifol inherited a mess that’ve already reached its breaking point, and looking back what I wrote before Opening Day, it turns out I was more correct than intended.

If Grifol nails his debut, then leadership was the problem the whole time. If the Sox stumble, then … leadership is still the problem, just one rung higher. Grifol is inheriting some issues, but he won’t have to pay for their sins, which is one reason why he doesn’t see much of a point in talking about them.

Indeed, Grifol won’t face the same consequences that befell Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn, but that paragraph still feels off because Grifol’s been a bigger all-around dud than I could’ve ever imagined. There’s nothing to suggest he’s worth preserving if Getz is open to turning over everything else.

So what will change? When it comes to the roster, Getz might post an “OPEN FOR BUSINESS” sign.

“We’re a team that needs to get more athletic,” Getz said. “I spoke about the defense, I think we’ve seen some of the baserunning that’s been frustrating, whether that be related to effort or the ability to take the extra base, all things that are being evaluated and most likely need to be adjusted.

“In regards to the makeup of the roster, it would be shortsighted not to at least exhaust or at least entertain some ways to improve the team. When you’re a sub-60-win team, which we are at this point (55-86 entering Saturday), I certainly need to find ways to improve this for 2024, and if that means we need to acquire some players by moving some of the players who are on this roster, I’m willing to do that.”

We watched Hahn identify right field and second base as problems every September, because he couldn’t identify a solution to those problems every winter, so we shouldn’t take Getz at his word. But if Jerry Reinsdorf didn’t want to see some overhaul of the roster, I don’t think he would’ve bothered overthrowing the front office, because he’s only moved by Chernobyl-grade disasters.

In the meantime, based on that first paragraph, I wonder if we’re watching Eloy Jiménez’s final weeks in a White Sox uniform.

Spare Parts

While the White Sox never interviewed Mike Rizzo despite the mutual connections, it wasn’t because an extension with the Nationals was imminent. Ken Rosenthal makes it sounds like Washington ownership is pulling a power play, although Rizzo’s been there so long that he comes off as a bit of a hoarder.

Why not just be done with Rizzo rather than continue with this painful public charade, which so far includes the resignation of Rizzo’s longtime international scouting director, John Dipuglia, and the decisions not to renew the contracts of at least 14 scouts? […]

Rizzo can be mercurial, according to Nationals sources who spoke on condition of anonymity in exchange for their candor. The team was slow to embrace analytics and has struggled to develop pitching. And Rizzo’s current staff, without question, is a tad bloated. The Nationals’ directory currently lists 12 special assistants to the GM, a number rival execs find astonishing. Half of them are not getting renewed.

The “turnaround” in the headline was a muted one, because Lucas Giolito still gave up four runs on three homers over seven innings. He fell to 1-7 since leaving the White Sox, although he did lower his ERA to 8.02. But I bring this up because of this paragraph in the first story:

He blamed himself for the underwhelming performances while crediting the Angels pitching, analytics and biomechanics staffs for helping him make quick adjustments that he said improved his velocity and the ride on his fastball.

Indeed, Giolito’s fastball averaged 94 mph during the month of August, after flattening out at 92.6 mph in July. It didn’t seem to matter much, but it’s something to keep in mind when figuring out what we should think of Ethan Katz.

This registers as a surprise, because when it came to the Rays’ persistent attendance issues, I bought the idea that the location had nearly as much to do with it as the dome. Even if they build up the neighborhood around the new ballpark better, it’s still hard to escape the fact that a causeway separates the ballpark from where most of the people in the Tampa Bay area live.

Still, this stadium would eliminate one issue that prevents Major League Baseball from turning to expansion, unless they want to treat Miller Park and Guaranteed Rate Field as equal matters of urgency in order to extract more public funds (they shouldn’t).

I don’t expect the owners will go to this well for too long as there is reportedly something like $4B on the table for two expansion teams

This is a weird, uncertain-sounding statement. Starts out saying they should “entertain” improving the team then says no, we of course need to find ways to improve the team

There’s also the odd qualifier of “when you’re a sub-60-win team.” So, if they finish with 61 wins, does he not need to find ways for them to improve? Getz never gets a job like this with any kind of real interview process.

JazznFunk

There is a lot of qualifier, uncertainty in Getz-speak. Even in the paragraph just before about the base running.

And I guess 60 wins in the benchmark for decisions….

Clearly, the real problem is not that the team doesn’t win, is worse than 26+ other major league teams, and is in total disarray. The problem, as new GM Chris Getz astutely observes, is the darned disappointment of 2022. I can’t wait until that disappointment wears off and I can appreciate how fun it is to watch this shitty Sox team lose to teams like the A’s, Rockies, Royals, and Tigers.

This team would have to win 5 of the last 21 games to be a 60 win team. We’ll see!

Getz, Grifol and Jerry may be the worst trio to articulate anything to White Sox fans. At least Hahn got us to buy into the rebuild. At least Kenny’s passion(for better or worse) was something fans appreciated for a time and won a world series. This new group is absolutely horrid at speaking to White Sox fans.

StockroomSnail

He just vomits words you have dig through to try and figure out what he’s on about.

$4B on the table for two expansion teams

So the expansion fees of $2B will be nice, no matter how it is paid out. But the expansion fee has to be that high when you are now splitting the pie with 2 additional teams than before,

BenwithVen

If the rumors at the trade deadline were true, than trading Eloy will probably be one of the first things done in the offseason. It’s gonna suck to see some team make a tweak in his swing and turn him in the .300/40/100 guy that was envisioned.

I also see no reason to keep Katz around. Bummer and Kopech have done nothing but regress under his watch and whatever he’s been doing with Cease this season is obviously not working. Also, as much as I can’t stand Grifol, he should probably have a say in who his pitching coach is (ditto with Charlie Montoya).

upnorthsox

I wonder if Eloy’s funky stance is part of the cause of his GB rate. Probably no chance of the Sox getting him to change though.

Root Cause

I’d rather see Eloy be that .300/40/100 guy than keep him here as he is. Even if he wears a Minn uniform, it is better to face him 20 times than have him playing for us 100 games/year.

Matt

So defense, baserunning and athleticism….not the failing offense and overall checked out performances? What about the manager who clearly is not good at this job? Oh he is going to be supported, as the previous regime did not support him…Glad “all things” are evaluated and “most likely” addressed…AKA: We’re good, trust us. Just need the fans to hope for the best and buy season tickets!

soxygen

I don’t know what happened, because all these guys were definitely taught defense and baserunning when they were in the minors. Must be that they are just so disappointed about last season that they forgot how to run, catch, and throw.

upnorthsox

I’m happy to hear that something frustrates him about this team because the whole thing annoys the hell out of me.

Foulkelore

Has Getz mentioned OBP or walking once yet? They have a .295 team OBP and 6.3% walk percentage, both dead last in baseball. The 29th ranked team has a .300 OBP and 6.7% walk rate, so that’s a significant gap between the Sox and even the second worst team in these areas. Let’s see who that 29th ranked team is, so the Sox can be careful to not model anything after them … oh, the Royals. Cool.

Matt

Jerry doesn’t look at numbers, if he did the record being the record wouldn’t have been an excuse to use this year. Same with that insane David Eckstein quote. It all starts at the top with the White Sox.

shumway

After Jerry dies it will all be validated in several books.

shumway

This has been the main issue for quite some time. They don’t get on base and create runs because they can’t talk a walk. They either can’t see a strike from a ball or aren’t interested in taking balls. Both are problematic, but one can be influenced by coaching/leadership. You’d think with all the walks they give up they’d learn how important it is to take them.
Quite a groundbreaking statement for Getz to say he’s open to moving players. As if there is anything else to do on a team that’s sucked for 2.5 years now?

Foulkelore

Colas just ran into Andrus on a popup that looks like it hurt Andrus’s wrist (and caused a 2 base error). Colas often doesn’t look like he knows what he’s doing out there. Getz should find the guy responsible for the development of the minor leagues for the last few years and make it a priority to fire that guy.

GrinnellSteve

I was just wondering when an outfielder last had 6 errors. Maybe it happens with some frequency, but I doubt it. And 6 errors in as few chances as he’s had is positively unreal (or more accurately negatively unreal).

soxygen

I think Leury had 7 as an outfielder in 2019. That was a bad year for him out there.

GrinnellSteve

In 1988, Chili Davis and Vlad Sr. had 19 errors in more than twice as many innings. Most of the leaders are from days when gloves were not very good, but as we scroll down to 9, a number of recent players show up.

Joliet Orange Sox

Vlad Sr. was just an awful defensive outfielder. No glove would’ve been good enough to make him a good fielder. He has to be one of the worst defensive players to make the Hall of Fame who actually spent a lot of time in the field at a position. Some worse defenders like Frank Thomas were shifted to DH. The worst defender I ever saw who’s in the Hall of Fame is Nolan Ryan but he’s in the hall because of strikeouts not fielding.

Joliet Orange Sox

So was Nolan Ryan’s!

(Vlad Sr. had 126 assists and 125 errors in his 15 years of playing outfield.)

And Frank’s arm might have been the worse, they were a bookend set!

As long as you’re going to stipulate HOF then it’s not worth arguing but as soon as Manny gets in there’s a new sheriff in Cooperstown and it’s not even close.

BenwithVen

This is just baseball the way that Reinsdorf remembers it.

I love also that part of Getz’s defense of Pedro is that “He’s experienced winning.”

During the last 4 seasons (3 full seasons and the shortened 2020 season), Kansas City’s win percentage was .398. So it also would have been accurate to say “in recent years, he experienced winning less than 40% of the time.”

Last edited 12 days ago by soxygen
As Cirensica

He has experienced winning, just not a lot of it. A .398 win percentage requires some winnings so the statement is kinda true and something Hahn would say. Getz learned from the master. Finding a positive thing within a catastrophic disaster and build on it so the audience forget the disaster.

He didn’t cause it, but he didn’t purposefully sabotage it either.

I’m back for more, today has me in a pissed off mood. I’d respect Chris Getz more if he just came out and said: “Pedro is my friend, and I’m scared to be the GM of this team alone. So don’t think of this like some professional doing a good job, but more like a leap of faith adventure with my friend manager, Pedro. I hope White Sox fans can give a couple ole’ Kansas city boys a chance at turning this thing around. I mean what else are you going to do? Whine about it for years to come despite nothing changing? So what do ya say?” The 2024 marketing can be The Soxy Adventures of Chris and Pedro: Chapter 1: Grifol Getz It. They could do a whole cheesy comic book theme thing with it too. Honestly there is a missed opportunity I think. Instead we get the damn generic talk but sans the ability to dodge tough questions without answering them Hahn lawyer style.

To Err is Herrmann

I’ve lost that lovin’ feeling. Whoa-oh that lovin’ feeling. I’ve lost that lovin’ feeling and it’s gone gone gone. Whoa-oo-whoa-oo-whoa-oo-whoa-oo-whoa

As Cirensica

Is this a Hall & Oates reference? Love their music. Guilty pleasure.

Right Size Wrong Shape

The Righteous Brothers would like a word.

fustercluck

maybe it’s Pedro’s favorite Fleetwood Mac song

Right Size Wrong Shape

He hasn’t even given any thought to naming his favorite Fleetwood Mac song.

As Cirensica

Well, I’ll be darn….didn’t know that song was written by the Righteous Brothers. I only knew the version of Hall & Oates.

StockroomSnail

Ugh, Getz is painful to listen to.

Wayne

Is John Dipuglia a good candidate for a hire? Maybe Sam Mondry-Cohen has his number. He is Dominican, so maybe that helps with them not interviewing minorities for Getz’s job.

Who is going to be hired as Farm Director?

roke1960

It really doesn’t matter what Getz says. If he has decided to keep Grifol, then he is utterly clueless. Nothing else matters.

Chip Ramsey

Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again trying to get a different result. Keping Chris Getz and Pedro Grifol is insanity.
