Minor league roundup: August 18

While the best hopes for an internal upgrade struggled at the upper levels, the lower levels regained the services of two early-round draft picks: Trayce Thompson, who injured his thumb on May 30, and Thomas Royse, who had battled a sore elbow after his last appearance on July 30.

  • Durham 5, Charlotte 1
    • Brent Morel (SS) went 2-for-4 with a strikeout.
    • Tyler Flowers and Jordan Danks (RBI) were both 1-for-4 with a K.
    • Dayan Viciedo wore the collar, striking out twice. He’s wiffed nine times in 23 at-bats since coming back to Charlotte.
    • Carlos Torres was off: 5 2/3 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 HR.
    • Clevelan Santeliz gave up a run on two hits and two walks over an inning of work, striking out two.
  • Huntsville 17, Birmingham 4
    • Josh Phegley went 2-for-5 in his Double-A debut.
    • Eduardo Escobar went 0-for-3 with two walks and a strikeout.
    • Christian Marrero singled, walked and struck out over four PAs.
    • Kyle Bellamy was roughed up, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and an HBP over 1 1/3 innings. He struck out one, and did strand two inherited runners.
  • Winston-Salem 4, Salem 3 (Game 1, 14 innings)
    • Brandon Short went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
    • Jose Martinez was 1-for-5 with a sac bunt; Jon Gilmore 1-for-6 with a K.
    • The rain delay limited Stephen Sauer to two innings, where he allowed a run on four hits. He recorded one strikeout.
  • Hickory 7, Kannapolis 4
    • Trayce Thompson went 0-for-4 with an RBI, walk and two strikeouts in his first game back.
    • Tyler Saladino hit his second homer, a solo shot. He was 1-for-4 with a strikeout.
    • Miguel Gonzales and Juan Silverio (double) were also 1-for-4.
    • Nick Ciolli drew a walk and struck out twice over four PAs.
    • Ryan Buch wasn’t sharp: 4 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K.
  • Orem 12, Great Falls 3
    • Ross Wilson singled, doubled, walked and scored three runs in four trips to the plate.
    • Andy Wilkins went 1-for-3 with a walk.
    • Michael Blanke went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
    • Steven Upchurch allowed four runs on six hits and three walks over four innings, striking out four.
    • Thomas Royse pitched a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.
