Roch Cholowsky and the Winston-Salem Dash keep getting rained out, so in order to pull more first impressions from the beginning of his pro career, you can go back to his ramp-up period in Arizona, which Jason Pennini covered from a pro scouting perspective at Baseball America.
He writes that Cholowsky had all five tools on display against bridge league competition, which shouldn't necessarily read as overly bullish given what's known about his skill set, and how it might be more easily applied against that level of competition.
What jumped out to me more was this review of sixth-round pick Alex Weingartner, a tooled-up outfielder from New Jersey who commanded an over-slot bonus.
Mechanically, he has a quiet swing without a lot of moving parts. Weingartner has an idea of how to dip his back shoulder and elevate with intent.
In center, Weingartner is quick and moves well, but his reads and tracking ability have room for improvement. Two balls were hit his way. The first was in front of him, and he course-corrected midway to make the catch. The second was over his head, back to the center field wall. Weingartner misjudged it, taking a first step forward before pivoting back, and the ball landed on the warning track.
I’m in on Weingartner’s body and athleticism. He is well built and physically mature for his age. He’s a speedster but has some pop, too.
