Pregame notes: Who has the better lineup here?

The White Sox feel that Davis Martin has largely addressed the pitch-tipping that plagued him during his first inning against the Red Sox, so now he can take on more of an age-old challenge.

"When the fastball command is there, it's good," said pitching coach Zach Bove. "It kind of sets up everything, it gives them something they’ve got to honor rather than just the spin. We feel good about the four-seam specifically, if he’s throwing it to the good spots, then I think that helps his whole arsenal play out."

Martin's average four-seam velocity was 94.2 mph in the first two months of the season, where it's been 93.1 mph since the All-Star break, so there's less margin for error with his fastball command. And Bove didn't hide from the idea that fatigue is still a factor to some degree.

"It's multiple factors, that's one of it, right?" Bove said. "Some of it's like, if the delivery is off, is it fatigue, the innings pitched, generally, how the body's feeling, right? Everyone goes through different stretches throughout the year. I don't think it's one specific thing, but it is a combination of different factors."

Martin is squaring off against a Guardians lineup that looks a bit more viable against right-handed pitching with Steven Kwan hitting more like himself, and Nathaniel Lowe newly installed at the deadline. A functional José Ramírez would really tie the room together, but it's not clear the Guardians have that yet.

Meanwhile the Sox are hitting .221/.301/.367 since the All-Star break, and one of their best options against lefties and hottest hitters in general, Chase Meidroth, is out of the lineup due to left wrist discomfort. The White Sox say Meidroth is available off the bench and should start Tuesday against Reds lefty Nick Lodolo.

Speaking of injuries, Chris Murphy (flexor strain) expects to be ready to return pretty soon after the 15-day minimum stay on the injured list, and certainly should be back this season. And while no one is talking up Tanner Murray (dislocated left shoulder) as someone who is going to return this year necessarily, he's doing a lot of defensive drills these days.

This is actually Colson Montgomery's sixth start of the season in the No. 6 slot, but it still registers as a notable tumble in light of him hitting .189/.262/.297 with a strikeout rate over 38 percent since the All-Star break.

This is Brenton Doyle's 49th career start in the leadoff spot. He's hit .194/.239/.309 there, but the Sox are obviously banking on him transcending his career numbers.

The White Sox are still TBA for Thursday's starter against the Reds. Will Venable said Fedde is a candidate for it, depending on if there's a need for him to be used before then. It doesn't sound like using him three times in four days was how they wanted his first stint in the bullpen to go.

"It is tough, and Fedde is a pro, and he understands the role," Bove said. "It's got to be flexible, that that was the conversation from Day 1. Obviously, he provides length, but he's pitched in some short innings just because of where the pen is at. We're trying to keep Fedde as routine-oriented as we can. But knowing there's going to be some adjustments and have to fill in wherever the game dictates."
