White Sox Minor Keys: July 19, 2026

Hagen Smith returned to action on Sunday after missing a little more than a month with a shoulder impingement, but not in his usual spot.

Like Tanner McDougal before him, Smith came off the IL and joined the Charlotte bullpen, pitching the seventh inning in Charlotte's 3-2 loss to Durham.

Smith took the loss, which is pretty incredible considering the way the inning started. He recorded the first two outs on four pitches, striking out Homer Bush Jr. with three fastballs, then getting Nick Madrigal to line the first four-seamer he saw to second base.

However, former teammate Oliver Dunn was able to coax a seven-pitch walk to keep the inning alive, and when Smith started out Carson Williams with a fastball at the knees, Williams came within a few feet of hitting a two-run homer. Instead, he had to settle for a triple, and while Smith intentionally walked old friend Austin Slater before unintentionally walking Jacob Melton on five pitches to load the bases, he was able to rally from a 3-1 count to strike out Jake Cave to leave 'em loaded.

Smith threw fastballs for 18 of his 23 pitches, so perhaps his outing was closer to a rehab appearance than a full-strength effort, but that'll be easier to tell when he makes his next appearance.
