The White Sox have a lot of shortstops in their system, and they could add another if they draft Roch Cholowsky or Grady Emerson with the first overall pick next month.
As they seek to distribute those infielders around the diamond to create upward mobility at various levels, Caleb Bonemer is probably the first place to start.
Bonemer committed three errors over the course of two innings on Thursday against Knoxville. The first and third were on fumbled exchanges when moving to his right, but the one in the middle was a routine grounder that had Bonemer moving in the direction of first base, and it just skipped under his glove.
That gives him four errors in nine chances at shortstop with the Barons, which could be written off as an unflattering sample size. But when you combine his work at third base, he's up to six errors in his first nine games with Birmingham, and when incorporating his season at Winston-Salem, he's already matched his error total from 2025 (19) in 41 fewer games. This would be a bigger problem if his bat weren't expected to carry his profile. If he hits like he should, then a shift to left field or first base could be a perfectly fine allocation of resources.
