Noah Schultz made his first rehab start with Charlotte against Buffalo on Tuesday night after sitting a few weeks with the recurrence of right knee patellar tendinitis, and he didn't make it out of the second inning before hitting his pitch limit.
The bad news? The line was pretty ugly, as he allowed two runs on three walks and a hit (which happened to be a two-run homer) over 1⅔ innings and 38 pitches. If the whole thing is that Schultz only walks guys in clumps when his knee is bothering him, then the overall line doesn't suggest he's past it. Also, the stuff was a smidge down across the board, although not in a way that throws flags.
Then you watch his start and see that he struck out the final three batters he faced on a total of 11 pitches, and all of the ugliness came over his first six batters. If it was just a matter of him breaking off the rust, then perhaps he'll be ready to help sooner rather than later. For the time being, if he responds well to his first outing, he'll make his next start on Sunday.
