Sporcle Saturday: Shared first names

Good morning!

This week's theme for Sporcle Saturday is a bit of a departure from the usual regular season quizzes. Sox Machine's very own managing editor, the inimitable Jim Margalus, came up with the idea while watching the Sox-Dbacks tilt the other night.

Jim's inspiration: before Noah Schultz made his debut, there had never been another Noah to play for the White Sox before then. Per Jim's research, the same applies for the Colsons, Davis(s), Chases, Seranthonys, Jedixsons, Lenyns, and Duncans of the world. That begged the question: amongst the other first names on the roster, who was the last guy to play for the White Sox with the same shared first name? As it turns out, there's enough of a list to make for a good quiz! Some of the names will be easier than others: my particular favorite is the name from 1932.

How this quiz is structured: I included the 2026 guys on the roster who share the same name as their most recent predecessors, and those are grouped together. My hope is that will act as a bit of a cheat sheet for the others. There are a few guys with the same shared name who overlapped on the same club, but all the rest are unique. In all, that makes for 41 names. How many can you get? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I've allotted the full 25 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I've provided the season the most recent last guy to play for the Sox with the shared first name, and the primary position of that player.

Useless information to amuse, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • With the addition of Schultz, there have now been six Noahs to make the major leagues.
  • The first of those is Noah Lowry, who played for the Giants from 2003-2007.
  • Evidently Bo Naylor kinda-sorta qualifies, though I didn't include him in the six Noahs. Full given name: Noah-Gibson James Washington Naylor. I can see why he goes with "Bo".
