Good morning!
The date was seventy-five years ago tomorrow: November 9, 1950. After twenty-one years with the White Sox, shortstop Luke Appling was released by the organization to pursue the opportunity to become the manager of the Memphis Chicks of the South Atlantic League. Appling, of course, still holds a number of White Sox records and tops the list of games played at shortstop with the franchise.
None knew it then, but the player who followed Appling had a nice run of several seasons at short, followed by another guy after that who would go on to the Hall of Fame. The '30s through the '50s (and part of the '60s) saw some great Sox players at the position!
Today's Sporcle, is about games played, most of them at shortstop.
To make the cut for the quiz, a player needed to have:
- Played at least 50 games for the team, and;
- 80% of their appearances came at shortstop.
So, not just total games! To give you an example: the third guy on this list had 1,506 games at short with the Sox, but 1,511 games in total. In all there are 32 names: how many can you get? Good luck!
Quiz Parameters
- I’ve allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
- For hints, I’ve provided the tenure of the player, and the number of games overall.
Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:
- Just three players on this list had an OPS+ better than league average: the top guy (113) and the sixth guy (109), but also our 2025 guy (130)! That last guy already has the eighth-most home runs of any player on this list, in fact. A 30-dinger season next year probably sees him in the top three.
- The most home runs of any player on this list hit 109.
- The most stolen bases? 318, by the third guy on this list.
