Another day, another roster move, but one unrelated to the 28-man squad: The White Sox claimed infielder Ben Cowles off waivers from the Cubs and added him to the 40-man roster, which is now at 39.
Cowles had been designated for assignment by the Cubs after they claimed Carlos Santana. They originally acquired him from the Yankees in a trade for Mark Leiter Jr. at the 2024 deadline, as he'd been a productive hitter at Double-A Somerset, but Triple-A has posed a bigger challenge, as he's hit just .238/.304/.382 with 132 strikeouts over 113 games for the Iowa Cubs.
Cowles, 25, was selected in the 10th round of the 2021 draft from the University of Maryland, where he was a teammate of Sean Burke.
