BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Of all the White Sox minor league affiliates, the Winston-Salem Dash have had the toughest sledding, and in a way that will look familiar to White Sox fans. They finished last in the South Division with a 25-40 first-half record, marred by a 4-13 record in one-run games.

"We're not satisfied with the wins and losses, that's for sure," Dash manager Patrick Leyland said. "But I am very content with the competitiveness that we've shown all throughout the year. We've had a lot of tough ones. We're starting to get on the right side of some of those now."

Case in point: the last two games against the first-place Bowling Green Hot Rods. On Wednesday, the Dash scored four in the ninth to steal a 5-4 victory at Bowling Green Ballpark. On Thursday, they fell behind 4-0 early before a middle-inning rally, capped by a three-run homer by White Sox position player of the month Alec Makarewicz, turn the tables for a 6-4 win. They're now 16-22 in the second half, and their 8-6 record over their last 14 games represents their best baseball of the year.

A few items to relay from a brief pregame conversation:

*Samuel Zavala, who turned 21 last month, has made some strides in his second crack at High-A. Although the improvements are modest, and more in the sense of generating more action ...

... Leyland said there's greater growth as a person.

"Really, really proud of Sammy, and how he's been on the field, off the field," Leyland said. "He's become a leader for us, and I don't know if I would have predicted that at the beginning of the year. That's something that we're incredibly proud of for him.

*Jeral Perez bounced between second base and shortstop over the first three months of the season, but he's moved to second base since the end of June, and he'll continue to play there in order to accommodate third-round pick Kyle Lodise, who arrived this week and will get the majority of reps at short.

*Sam Antonacci apparently makes a superfan of every manager.

"Just a manager's dream," Leyland said. "I mean, the way that this guy goes about it day in and day out. He's so consistent, and he just gives you everything he has in all facets of the game every day. And that is something that is rare, frankly, to see a guy just getting started in pro ball to understand. He does not take a pitch off all game. That is the kind of player he is. Loved having him, love seeing what he's doing now in Birmingham. I'm not surprised by it at all. This guy, you know, he's a gamer, and he's fun to have."
