Dick Allen

Good morning!

It was on this day in 1972 that Dick Allen smashed a home run into the centerfield bleachers, becoming just the fourth player in the history of Comiskey Park to do so. (Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg, and Alex Johnson are the others)

On this day, Harry Caray was announcing the game from the bleachers, and the ball nearly got to him:

(As an aside, the Sun-Times' Richard Roeper wrote about Allen and was at that game in 1972; check it out.)

At any rate, the home run put the White Sox up 5-2, the score which would ultimately win them the game. The win, coupled with the Athletics' 7-5 loss to the Tigers put the Sox up by half a game before, of course, ultimately falling behind the A's for good several days later. Still, what a fun game and what a fun season!

Today's Sporcle will quiz you on the players involved in that game. I've included players from both teams to make it both a heftier quiz and more challenging. In all, there are 22 names: how many can you get? Good luck (especially on the Yankees)!

Quiz Parameters

  • I've allotted 15 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I've provided the team, the position of the player, and grouped by team.

Possibly useful information that for this week, at least, serve as hints:

  • The Yankee catcher won Rookie of the Year in 1970 and MVP in 1976; his career was cut tragically short.
  • The Yankee first baseman is part of baseball family royalty, and went on to manage the Expos and the Giants.
  • The Yankee starting pitcher would serve as the pitching coach of the Yankees from 1996-2005.
  • The White Sox starting pitcher was in the midst of an insane four-year stretch which saw him log 300+ innings each season. He finished runner-up in Cy Young voting in 1972.
