The Birmingham Barons and the Rocket City Trash Pandas took the second game of their six-game series across town to Rickwood Field for the resumption of the Rickwood Classic on Tuesday, and the Barons made the understandable decision to not rig up the 115-year-old ballpark with streaming equipment for a one-off event.
Nevertheless, the absence of a video feed deprived them of one of those MiLB.com articles marveling over the same sequence happening twice. (Mets prospect Carlos De La Cruz got the treatment for his nearly identical walk-off homers on consecutive nights instead.)
In the top of the sixth, Rocket City's David Calabrese kept the inning alive with a two-out bunt single. He stole second, and then tried to score on Denzer Guzman's lined single to left. Rikuu Nishida rounded it off and came up firing, delivering a perfect hop to Calvin Harris, who applied the tag for the third out.
In the top of the eighth, Rocket City's David Calabrese kept the inning alive with a two-out walk. He stole second, and then tried to score on Denzer Guzman's lined single to left. Rikuu Nishida rounded it off and came up firing, delivering a perfect hop to Calvin Harris, who applied the tag for the third out.
It was damn near watching a replay live, with only a couple of subtle differences. On the second outfield assist, Rocket City manager Andy Schatzler came out to argue for obstruction because Harris spent more time in front of the plate awaiting Nishida's throw, but without replay, his plea stood as a difference of opinion.
Also, Nishida had to return to left field to pick up his glasses after his first throw home. He left nothing behind the second time, allowing him an uninterrupted jog back to the dugout on the first-base side. Multiple Birmingham infielders greeted him along the way by signaling "two" with their throwing hands.
I guess you had to be there. With Rickwood Field, you should consider it next time.
