Sporcle Saturday: Picked up the win, not a whole lot of whiffs

Which White Sox pitchers have gone at least five innings while striking out 1 or fewer batters and still picked up the win?

I didn’t count, but this guy probably is, like, half of the answers.

Good morning!

But for that dastardly Bobby Witt, Jr. the other night, Jonathan Cannon might have been an answer for today's Saturday Sporcle. As it is, he can take solace that, at the very least, he is the inspiration for this week's theme.

Cannon went six innings while striking out just one, which got me wondering: how often do Sox pitchers do that while also picking up the victory? Turns out, it isn't quite as rare as I thought: since 1990 there have been 113 instances where a White Sox starting pitcher went at least five innings, struck out one or zero batters, and notched a "W" under their belt.

And so for today that's what you'll be guessing: how many guys can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I've allotted 20 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I've provided the date of the game and the opponent.
  • To reiterate: a pitcher qualifies if they pitched at least 5 innings, struck out 1 or no batters, and received the decision as a win.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • The lowest game score from the players on this list was a 29, twice: once on 9/11/2004; that was a 5 inning, 5 ER effort that the Sox went on to win 13-6 over Anaheim. The other was a 5 2/3 inning, 6 ER performance in a 13-8 win over Minnesota on 5/12/2021.
  • On the flip side, the highest game score was a 75, on 8/8/2001. That was a complete game, 4-hit masterpiece in a 15-1 blowout.
  • The Sox opponent who has been victimized the most by this type of game: the Minnesota Twins, with a total of 18 games. Kansas City is right behind them at 17 games.
