Good morning!
A few weeks back, there was a request to take a look back at White Sox players who would not be confused with, shall we say, Jon Rauch. That is --if social media parlance is to be believed-- "Short Kings". While my running a weekly White Sox trivia column for the past eight years likely already tipped you off, the preceding sentence surely hammered the point home: I've used up my one bit of pop culture knowledge for the year.
At any rate, Baseball Reference/Stathead does have a filter to sort by listed height in their database. I ran the query, and it turns out there really is quite the list of names. In all, there are 108 players to appear for the White Sox who were listed at a height of 5 feet, 8 inches or shorter. How many can you name? Good luck!
Quiz Parameters
- I've allotted the full 25 minutes for completion attempts, for there are quite a few older players on this list/randos.
- For hints, I've provided their length of tenure, number of games appeared in, and primary position(s).
Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:
- More of a hint: one of the players on this list defeated an ostrich in a spaghetti-eating contest.
- Note that we have our own Shohei Ohtani (1901-02; pictured above, right).
- The 1923 player who appeared in one game as a pinch hitter is the shortest-listed player, at 5', 3". His only game came on September 1, 1923, as an unsuccessful pinch-hitter for pitcher Red Faber in the 5th inning of a Chicago White Sox rain-shortened blowout win over the Cleveland Indians.
