This week, we move beyond the infield and into the outfield, looking at who has manned the 7-8-9 positions on Opening Day over the decades. It’s an interesting list: as the “Useless Information” section notes below there’s been quite a bit of variability over the years, particularly of late.
As this Sporcle covers three positions, it’s going to be a big one: there are 285 entries in all. How many can you get? Good luck!

- As usual, you get the date of the game and the position, grouped by year.
Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:
- No player has started more than 8 times in an outfield position on Opening Day.
- That same player, does, however, hold the record for most consecutive Opening Day starts. (Right field, 1980-1987)
- This year will see the 12th consecutive different Opening Day outfield alignment.
