Sporcle Saturday: Happy birthday, Ted Lyons

Good morning!

On this day in 1900, one Theodore Amar Lyons was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Lyons, of course, is one of the great pitchers in franchise history though he often toiled away for some pretty lousy White Sox teams. When he retired in May of 1946 to manage the team after Jimmy Dykes' resignation, Lyons was (and still is) the franchise leader in:

  • Wins: 260
  • Innings pitched: 4,161
  • Complete games: 356 (next-closest on that particular list is 273!)

I wanted to develop a quiz that would incorporate Lyons' stats in some way, and so I decided to use pitcher wins as the metric. Initially, I thought I could use a threshold of 100 career wins with the White Sox as a cutoff, but that only makes 12 names. Thus, the cutoff to make this quiz is 50 wins or more while playing with the White Sox. In all, that's 49 guys: how many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I’ve allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints,  you get the pitcher’s years with the team, and the number of wins they recorded.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • Just 11 pitchers on this list also have recorded 1000+ strikeouts while on the Sox, though 3 of these do not have 100 or more wins.
  • The highest ERA from the pitchers on this list is 5.04, while the lowest is 1.81. A bonus star for you if you can name one or both.
