Sporcle Saturday: Zach Remillard makes history
Good morning!
Zach Remillard couldnโt have done much better of a day’s work this past Sunday, as he notably made a specific kind of history: he went 3-3, delivering the game-tying hit and the game-winning hit in the ninth inning or later in his very first game.
Even setting aside the specifics mentioned in the above tweet, Remillard is one of just 7 players in White Sox history to record three hits in their debut game, and the first in nearly 25 years (9/5/1998 being the last such instance).
Of course, 7 players does not a Sporcle make, so I adjusted the Stathead parameters to look at White Sox rookies with 2 or more hits in their debut game. That is today’s Sporcle, and it gives us 45 names: how many can you get? Good luck!
Quiz Parameters
- Iโve allotted 15 minutes for completion attempts.
- For hints, Iโve provided the date of the game and the position the player started at in the game.
Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:
- The White Sox are 27-16 in such games (there are two instances where two players debuted on the same date).
- Zach Remillard is the second-oldest player on this list: the shortstop to debut on 4/17/1930 has him beat by over a year (29 years, 116 days compared to 30 years, 188 days).
- As you may notice, four of the players on this list were pitchers (which I decided to retain on the list, likely much to the annoyance of some of you).

Some thick memories here, sweet and sad.
28/45. That’s about as good as I could do, and 3 or 4 of those were last name guesses. Got everyone after 1996, and only missed 5 in my lifetime (should have had the ’75 1B). What a diverse group of stars and unknowns. Yet another great quiz, Ted!
so who were the seven with 3 hits?
25/45, and I would only have a chance at three more. I missed only one name after 1970. Excellent challenge, Ted.
Glad you all enjoyed it. RayHerbert, the seven with three hits (well, six here since I’m excluding the already-named Zach Remillard):
