White Sox Minor Keys: April 29, 2019

The White Sox filled in the roster gap created by Ryan Burr’s late DL placement by calling up Dylan Covey. Covey was optioned previously when the Sox had two long relievers, but with Manny Bañuelos in the rotation to stay, Covey has a niche he can fill.

To replace Covey, the Knights received Matt Foster from Birmingham. Foster, an under-the-radar relief prospect due in part to his brief retirement a couple years ago, started his season with 9⅔ scoreless innings with the Barons, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out 12.

Foster made his Triple-A debut on Monday night, retiring all six batters he faced with a strikeout.

The Barons lost the services of Foster for a good reason, and they’re without Micker Adolfo for a lesser one. Adolfo his heading to the IL with soreness in his surgically repaired right elbow. He started his Double-A career hitting .205/.337/.295, which isn’t all that impressive, but better than others. The White Sox might be able to make lemonade out of the situation if they’re willing to promote Luis Robert, who had another big game.

  • Ian Hamilton: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Free Luis Robert!

Burdi also promoted to Birmingham.

Steele Walker to W-S.

karkovice squad

I hope he dominates AA and forces their hand to promote him to the majors by June.

Lurker Laura

That would be awesome. He won’t get promoted without a stop in AAA first, but it’s fun to think about anyway.

GrinnellSteve

There was a time when AA was more about prospects and AAA was where veteran depth got stashed. It wasn’t unusual to go straight to the majors from AA.

Lurker Laura

That time was even fairly recent. It just rarely happens now. It does happen, just not as often.

karkovice squad

Still happens for some of the best players. Usually tied to the ML club being on course for the postseason with a hole on the roster.

I don’t think they will skip the level but I don’t think AAA is going to be a better test than AA. It ultimately depends on whether they think there’s a 2020 postseason appearance in the offing. If there is, then they should learn from Jimenez’s growing pains and get Robert enough of a rind this season in the majors.

lil jimmy

won’t he see more breaking stuff, and off speed pitches in AAA?

karkovice squad

If that’s the case, it hasn’t helped any of our prospects hit the ground running when they get to the majors.

I think the upside is limited because the ratio of premium talent to fodder is higher in AA. And the downside is more exposure means a bigger scouting book on him when he gets to the majors.

asinwreck

Can @GrinnellSteve use your considerable influence to convince Jerry Reinsdorf to sell the team?

Brett R. Bobysud

The severity of Adolfo’s injury, and length of time he’ll be out, might determine what they do with Robert.

If Micker’s gonna be out for a while, it makes sense to promote Robert.

However, if Micker projects to be back within the next week or so, it might make more sense to wait a bit, rather than call Robert up for a handful of games and then immediately send him back to W-S.

Greg Nix

They wouldn’t send down Robert after he goes to AA. If anyone needs to go down, it’d probably be Rutherford.

phillyd

Trade, trade, trade.

Torpedo Jones

Trade who for what? The problem is that our backlog of “quality outfield prospects” seem to have forgotten how to baseball at AA. Trading them now would mean selling low. Need somebody to show something before you get anything decent back. I’m with Greg that it probably would be best just to send someone back down a level.

dwjm3

I wonder if Robert will go from AA to the show

PauliePaulie

Fire Vizquel, then promote Robert and Walker.

Adam Engel hit 265 in high A, and has gone down at every level. Unlike Engel, Robert can hit and he knows how to use his speed. And based on the bonus he was paid no other prospect should stand in his way.

Right Size Wrong Shape

What does Adam Engel have to do with anything?

melidoperez

I think it’s an attempt to use his presence on the roster to justify moving Robert fast. The problem with that is Engel obviously has some sort of compromising pictures of someone because he is probably like the 11th most qualified guy in the org to be on the MLB roster, so we’re not dealing with reality in some way.
