Pregame notes: Trying to sweep without a starter

The White Sox will try to complete a three-game sweep at Target Field, which would effectively end the Twins' postseason chances. Those weren't in great shape to begin with, but FanGraphs had them at 12.6 percent before series, and it's down to 5.2 percent now.

Meanwhile, the White Sox have surged from 77.9 percent to 90.6 percent, and an 80 percent chance of winning the division. What a country.

The White Sox will open the game with Jordan Hicks on the mound, but we'll see if it's an opener arrangement, or more a true bullpen day. José Urquidy could theoretically offer bulk, but with Tyler Gilbert and Tyler Davis the types to be used as fresh arms and discarded shortly after, Will Venable might try to get five or six outs from a bunch of guys.

Chase Meidroth had made 17 consecutive starts after returning from a two-game absence to give his sore wrist a rest, but he's getting the day off this afternoon. Sam Antonacci will start at second base, Tristan Peters in left, and Brenton Doyle in center.

On the Minnesota side, Byron Buxton isn't on the injured list, but he also went the entire series without starting. Joe Ryan is on the injured list with a mild left glute strain, but Mitchell Armentrout at the Sun-Times got a pretty good quote from him regarding what he sees in the other dugout.

‘‘That’s been a crazy revamp,’’ said Ryan, who’s out with a strained glute. ‘‘You can just see the energy on the field. It’s so different there. In the past, it was kind of like you’ve still got to pitch well, but they didn’t seem like they really always wanted to be there. Now it just seems like they’re hungry for it.’’
