BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Upon leaving Rickwood Field, there turned out to be one way the Birmingham Barons could've had a worse time at Rickwood Field.
Yes, they lost to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 23-4. Yes, they were outhit 26-11, and outhomered 7-1. Yes, third catcher Jorge Corona had to record the 27th out because Eric Adler gave up three homers in the ninth, then hit a batter to loud suspicions from the third base dugout.
But despite storms in the area, the occasional rumble of thunder and a few brief nuisance drizzles, the Barons were able to get the game over with as quickly as possible, which turned out to be 3 hours and 10 minutes. Based on the puddles driven through on the way out to Third Avenue, the grounds crew would have had to roll out the tarp if Rickwood were situated just two blocks north.
Regardless, Rickwood Field is a good place to watch bad baseball, and there's no prettier scoreboard for an ugly score.
