When I heard that William Bergolla Jr. got the worse end of a collision with Sam Antonacci and had to be carted off Truist Field on Thursday night, I'd assumed that Antonacci's combination of unfamiliarity and aggression was the culprit. After all, he'd avoided a close call with Dustin Harris in his first week as a left fielder, and undercommunication on a shallow fly would provide a similar sort of learning experience.
But when I loaded up Charlotte's livestream and watched the play unfold, it appears as though Antonacci attempted to bail on the play. Unlike the Jacob May-Tim Anderson collision of 2015, or the Yoán Moncada-Willy García incident in 2017, this wasn't a case of two players going full tilt when they arrived at the same spot at the same time. Antonacci slid well in advance of Bergolla in an attempt to let Bergolla catch the ball, which he somehow did. If he did anything wrong, it's that he didn't stay flat after hitting the turf. His knees came up, and that's what Bergolla's leg clipped as he went tumbling over.
Now that we know William Bergolla has just a bruised shin, here is the collision in LF between him and Antonacci. #Knights pic.twitter.com/Nr8ky8CRgi

But mostly it appears as though it was an accident, and one that looked a lot worse than it actually was. There's quite the divide between the visuals -- Bergolla not only getting carted off, but needing assistance from two people to even get on the cart -- and the White Sox's identification of the injury, which is a bruised shin.
