The Charlotte Knights completed their first weekend of the season by completing a sweep of the Durham Bulls, via a second consecutive walk-off victory Sunday afternoon.
This one was literal, as the Knights took advantage of Joe Rock's wildness to score the winning run without a hit. Mario Camilletti got hit by a first-pitch sinker, Josh Breaux bunted him to second, Sam Antonaccci backfilled first with a walk, and then a four-pitch walk to William Bergolla Jr. loaded the bases.
Oliver Dunn came to the plate and swung through a high fastball and a well-located slider to fall behind 0-2, but Rock missed badly with the next four to seal the deal.
Since the first Farm Fortnight of the season will run two weeks from now, you can consider this a prequel. Here's a quick summary for the hitters...
- Sam Antonacci: 4-for-12, 2 HR, 4 BB, 1 K, 1-for-1 SB
- William Bergolla Jr.: 8-for-12, 2 2B, 3 BB, 1 K, 2-for-4 SB
- Jacob Gonzalez: 2-for-6, 2 HR, 1 BB, 2 K
- Tanner Murray: 4-for-14, 2 HR, 1 BB, 3 K
- Jarred Kelenic: 0-for-7, 1 BB, 4 K, 1-for-1 SB
... and the lines for the starters who have thrown thus far:
- Noah Schultz: 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
- Tanner McDougal: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 8 K
- Hagen Smith: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 4 K
- Duncan Davitt: 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 7 K
From here, the Knights will head to Nashville for a series against the Sounds and a lot of me asking if they have time to talk.
Charlotte 4, Durham 3
- Sam Antonacci and William Bergolla Jr. both were 1-for-3 with two walks and a stolen base.
- Jacob Gonzalez homered twice, walked and struck out.
- Duncan Davitt gave up a walk and a homer before settling in: 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, 1 HR, 47 of 71 pitches for strikes.
Notes:
*Davitt got 18 swinging strikes on just 71 pitches, which was more than all of his Triple-A starts but one last year, when he recorded 19 over 101 pitches. Perhaps the Bulls just whiff a lot.
*One of Gonzalez's homers was well-struck, traveling 105.5 mph off the bat and 397 feet to left center. The other was a Truist Field Special:
JACOB GONZALEZ DOES IT AGAIN! 💪
