Sporcle Saturday: Contributing rookies

White Sox prospect Colson Montgomery

Good morning!

Okay: I recognize that using a photo of Colson Montgomery to lead with this post is likely more hopeful than it is realistic, but if I’m unable to provide you with good feelings and optimism now –2.5 months before Opening Day– then when will I?

The 2025 White Sox will most certainly be calling up a variety of rookies over the course of the season, and the aim would be for at least a couple of them to provide some glimmer of success for the future. Today’s Sporcle looks back at past rookies who have done just that: contributed a minimum (in some way or another) of 2 (Baseball Reference) wins above replacement on the season. The franchise hasn’t seen a rookie accomplish that since 2016, thanks to a variety of reasons including a global pandemic.

In all, you’ll be tasked with attempting to name 31 players. How many can you get? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • Iโ€™ve allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, Iโ€™ve provided the year, WAR accumulated, and position of the player in question.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • The average triple-slash from the players on this list: .290/.355/.437
  • The top bWAR for a rookie on this list came in 1966, with 6.4.
  • Five players on this list managed to accomplish said feat in fewer than 100 games.

27/31. All misses before 1950, though I should have gotten the 1911 guy. I thought of him, but thought he played infield.

27/31, with my misses being 1930, 1936, and both 1943 guys. The only one of those I would have had a chance to get was 1930.

May this quiz look quite different updated for the 2025 season.

1990, whew.
Had Frank Thomas broken camp with the White Sox in 1990, he would have won Rookie of the Year.

I got everybody from 1950-1990 with the exception of the 1988 guy, missed everyone before that and most after

26/31. Should have had the 1934 1B since my grandfather talked about him as his favorite player when he was a kid. Also glad to see the 1991 infielder on another quiz!

23/31. Kicking myself for not getting the 1950 SS, who was my grandmother’s favorite player (and who I always get). I guess I must have thought that I already guessed him or something. I got everyone from 1966 on and should have had 2 or 3 more.

1983 Rookie of the Year didn’t amass a 2.0 WAR and Fletcher 3.5 ๐Ÿคท

Right Size Wrong Shape

Unclear why he was ever issued a glove.

Good point and it’s nice that Scotty and Gordon have something to share
