Pregame Notes: Every reliever is one DFA away

White Sox pitcher Touki Toussaint

While the White Sox called up Zach DeLoach and Jairo Iriarte at the start of September to occupy the two extra roster spots, no Charlotte Knight should feel like he missed his only chance. That's particularly true on the pitching side, where all it takes is one outing of 40-plus pitches from a reliever who isn't in the organization's long-term plans to have Chris Getz calling for a fresh arm.

Today offered the first of what might be a few examples over the remaining 3½ weeks, as the White Sox designated Touki Toussaint for assignment, and called up Matt Foster to take his place.

Over the last month, Toussaint offered his usual combination of lots of innings and/or lots of pitches -- sometimes you'd get the latter without the former -- on a moment's notice, sometimes with little regard for the typically required amount of rest. The White Sox cut him loose after he threw 68 pitches over 2⅔ innings against the Orioles on Monday, which came just three days after he threw 63 pitches over four innings against Mets. Prior to that, he threw 35 and 46 pitches on consecutive days in the Detroit series.

For all his willingness to take the ball, he had a 7.43 ERA, a 5.09 FIP and 18 walks in 23 innings, so they both got something out of the arrangement.

Foster takes his place, and he'll hope to stick in the White Sox bullpen the rest of the way after throwing three scoreless innings over two appearances spaced 12 days apart. Around those outings, he'd thrown 15 quality innings for Charlotte, with a 2.40 ERA and 19 strikeouts against five walks, so it's been a smooth return from Tommy John surgery thus far.
